Another benefit of incubators is that their tenants can exchange ideas and advice with other budding entrepreneurs. “If you need help with something, like understanding how to advertise on Facebook, you can go to others in your space,” says David Ambrose, whose start-up, Scoop St., an online collective-buying service, moved into Dogpatch Labs’ New York incubator in January.

Mr. Ambrose’s company must move out by June, as residency there is limited to six months. The incubator currently provides 15 start-ups with as many as five desks per company, Wi-Fi access, conference space and snacks.

[Guest post from Mike Green, VP Content and Syndication, Collecta]

As announced on Twitter’s blog last week, Collecta is one of the six search companies to follow the big guys in licensing Twitter’s firehose. We’re pretty excited about it and think that the users who experience Collecta’s real-time streaming search results on either Collecta.com or one of our keyword driven widgets around the web will be too. What this means practically is that Collecta results will be more comprehensive, even lower-latency, and smoother in terms of presentation.

Today on Collecta, part of the experience is our own firehose of sorts — a real-time stream of content flowing from across the web that includes articles, photos, blog posts, comments, videos and social updates with latencies as low as .2 seconds between time of publish and time of delivery of a post as a relevant result in a user’s browser. We combine this stream with data from Twitter Search/Summize to allow users to experience a full range of results for their queries.

However, once the firehose is fully integrated and we aren’t searching Twitter separately, we will be able to examine every tweet for relevance to any open queries on the Collecta network and shoot them through our optimized pipe one at a time, blended with the rest of our results by timestamp. Meanwhile, we continue to create IP around delivering the right user experience — knowing what to drop from these streams when the volume of results is high for a hot topic. High volumes of data like the Twitter firehose are good news for these adaptive filtering systems — one of the many reasons we’re excited to be a new partner of Twitter’s in this way.

Stickybits based in the New York and SF Dogpatch Labs and founded by Billy Chasen and Seth Goldstein launched today. stickybits is a new platform for connecting the physical and digital worlds. Peter Flint will be joining the board (see his blog post) and here’s the Techcrunch coverage.

stickybits are unique codes that can be attached to physical objects. Using the stickybits mobile app, codes can be written to or read by any iPhone or Android device. Scanning codes shows information associated with the objects, and can notify users when their objects have been scanned, augmented, or moved.

According to stickybits investor Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus (IBM): stickybits is a platform with an open architecture for connecting the physical and digital worlds. This will come to be seen as completely obvious and wonderfully powerful, so I am very excited to get involved at the outset. There are great opportunities for innovation here; people will use our codes in ways we can’t even imagine.”

Using the stickybits mobile app, codes can be written to or read by any iPhone or Android device. Scanning codes shows information associated with the objects, and can notify users when their objects have been scanned, augmented, or moved.

We’re thrilled for Seth and Billy, and the launch of this truly novel product!

Dogpatch, which opened in January, offers start-ups a place to work, rent-free, for several months, along with the possibility of securing an investment down the line.
Socks, crumpled pieces of paper, scribbled-upon white boards and empty beef jerky packages are scattered around Dogpatch’s roomy office. “It’s been called a frat house for geeks,” says Peter Flint, a partner at Polaris who spends several days each week in the New York office.

“There is a lot of excitement and interest budding in New York,” he says. “And if we can help convince entrepreneurs to think about staying in New York versus going to Silicon Valley, then that’s a huge win.”
Currently, 13 companies are housed in the space, including Postling, the newest spawn of the founders and early employees of Etsy. Locals cite Etsy, an online shopping bazaar specializing in handmade crafts, as one of New York’s shining start-up success stories, along with DoubleClick; TheLadders, a jobs search site; and the Gilt Groupe.

“There wasn’t anything like this in New York when Etsy started,” said Chris Maguire, a co-founder of both Postling and Etsy. “We worked out of our apartments for the first few years.”
